Industry projects

As a technology and analytics company, PsyFyi is focused on creating the best service for shipping companies to capture seafarer feedback data. However, we are equally dedicated into the concept of “rising tide lifts all boats”, and hence want to invest our time and expertise in supporting a variety of industry projects through charities and member organisations.
What’s great about these projects are the different focus and data sets that they provide – whether it’s focused on safety and incidents, diversity of crew, or social interaction, they build a growing understanding of what life onboard is like for the seafarers.
Here are some examples of what a project can look like:
Example projects
GMF
Global Maritime Forum (GMF)
GMF is a Danish organisation for shipping companies. GMF ran a project with 12 of its members looking closely at the key factors that shape seafarers’ career development, well-being, and quality of life. The research was based on seafarers’ actual experiences from which 9 suggested guidelines were developed, a set of practical recommendations aimed at improving life at sea and enhancing the attractiveness of the maritime industry.
GMF was focused on creating guidelines based on data and research, which is where PsyFyi was able to support the project through data collection and analysis. We were very happy to work with the GMF as their view of “authentic, meaningful change can only be achieved when the people most affected are at the centre of the conversation.” aligned with our work to make seafarers voices heard in the industry.

CREW & CHIRP
PROJECT CREW by Confidential Human Factors Incident Reporting Program (CHIRP)
CHIRP is dedicated to providing a safe avenue for seafarers to share safety concerns and report close-call incidents and lessons learned through our confidential reporting service without fear of being identified or harming their careers. In addition CHIRP studies incidents in order to understand factors leading up to them. In PROJECT CREW, CHIRP aimed to use seafarer feedback data collected by PsyFyi, and recorded safety and near-miss incidents to analyse and identify any possible human factor causes to determine whether incident causes could be proactively identified. The study results are pending.
SIM & ISWAN
Social Interaction Matters (SIM) by International Seafarers’ Welfare and Assistance Network (ISWAN)
ISWAN is a charity focused on supporting and improving seafarer welfare. The SIM project is a long-term initiative by ISWAN to research and promote increased, quality social interaction and rest-time for seafarers. In the third phase of the project, PsyFyi was providing data collection and analysis services for the project, while also collecting physiological data via smartwatches from the seafarers and combining it with feedback data.
Finding correlations with feedback and physiological data in regards to recovery, social interaction, and welfare would help ISWAN discover drivers behind behaviour and enable seafarers to work more efficiently while remaining in good physical and mental condition. The study results are pending. Please find more information about the project on the ISWAN website.
