SATU LIPPONEN, Chief Operating Officer at PsyFyi
Satu has spent over 15 years in the technology sector of the maritime industry—a path she stumbled upon by chance, like many others. She has contributed to pioneering data companies such as Eniram, known for its vessel performance optimisation, and Concirrus, specializing in marine claims predictions; both have since been acquired by larger players. Though terms like big data, APIs, machine learning, predictive models, and AI are today’s biggest buzzwords, Satu has had those in her day-to-day vocabulary since 2009.
Satu joined PsyFyi to follow the data. The company focuses on crew data, the missing element in maritime despite the crew's pivotal role, whether in optimising vessels and reducing incidents. Satu works together with Claire to grow the company, allowing her to engage in her passion: understanding how clients use data, implementing a scalable SeaQ, and refining analytics outputs to help clients achieve their goals. As a shipping company, it is easy to get bogged down with the amount of data, software available, the tech architecture and what to monitor. SeaQ offers a low-barrier solution for clients, providing insights into crew welfare that aim to enhance industry safety and efficiency.
While Satu finds her best flow state while doing data analytics, she is also a strong advocate for work-life balance. She enjoys taking part in amateur theatre and participated in a 5500nm sailing race. One of her favourite travel activities is playing escape rooms around the world. As a data enthusiast, she meticulously tracks her stats: Satu has completed 73 escape rooms in 18 countries across all 5 continents, boasting a success rate of 77%. Her favourite escape room is the maritime-themed "The Neptune’s Curse" in Hamburg, located on the historic three-masted barque Rickmer Rickmers, built in 1896. This unique setting offers not only a distinctive escape room experience but also great fun!
