TOON VAN DE SANDE, Research and Project Development

Toon began his career as a theologian but later transitioned into providing support and assistance to seafarers, with a focus on First Emergency Response. He served as a sailing pastor for the Dutch Dredging and Offshore Industry and played a key role in the Maritime Piracy Humanitarian Response Programme by developing and delivering training courses worldwide. He trained seafarers in piracy preparedness and worked with colleges and shipping companies to equip trainers with the skills needed to deliver this training effectively.

Toon collaborated with Claire, the CEO, during the initial start-up phase of PsyFyi. As PsyFyi continues to grow, his responsibilities expand to include research and project development. In particular, he works with new clients to formulate the most relevant SeaQ questions during the early stages of collaboration. Additionally, Toon conducts research on how SeaQ can enhance quality within existing maritime organizations, addressing issues such as inspections, human rights, and bullying and harassment.

Toon was drawn to PsyFyi because it aligns with his core philosophy: rather than merely discussing the needs of seafarers, it’s crucial to take practical steps, listen closely, and let seafarers lead the conversation about improving their own circumstances. The way SeaQ collects data is unique, focusing on individual seafarers aboard specific ships, which generates valuable insights and best practices at the micro (ship), meso (company), and macro (industry) levels.

Despite his various roles, Toon continues to work as a chief mate in inland shipping, managing a 110-meter vessel. He and his wife share a passion for recreational sailing. Toon is also a family man and a bit of a philosopher at heart.
